How did it happen, and why?
Students from different parts of Ukraine announced a hunger strike and presented their political demands to the government. One of the main demands was to prevent the signing of a new Union Treaty.
Even then, educated youth chose a straightforward direction for their country - freedom and independence. In these pictures, we can see an attribute of the revolution at that time - ribbons on the heads of the protesters.
Among the appeals and posters were the following theses: "I agree to sacrifice my life for a free Ukraine", "Fighters for truth and freedom, you are the pride of the native people", "The Union Treaty is a prison for Ukraine", "Meet the real demands of the starving - save their lives".
In addition to the hunger strike from October 3 to 18, the youth blocked traffic in Kyiv for the first time. But when the police tried to disperse them, the people of Kyiv went to the streets and became a shield for the youth.
If you watch documentary videos of those events, you can see two camps: embittered pro-Soviet people and inspired youth who wanted to live in a free country.
During this period, one of the revolution's founders wrote "Independence Square" on a sheet of paper and fixed it in a tent city, where students were starving and got sick but stuck to each other and their own goal. We want to be grateful to the risking their lives and health students who fought for the declaration of independent Ukraine in the nineties.
That is why we decided to create some revolutionary ribbons, identical to an element of traditional Ukrainian clothing. We hope these ribbons will become one of the symbols of the struggle for the independence of our country.
We fought, we fight, and we will fight.
100% of the ribbons selling profit will be donated to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
